Decoding Health Insurance Quotes

by Health Insurance Staff on August 16, 2010

Health insurance quotes can be confusing. With so many different plans to choose from, and all of them having different benefits and various coverage levels, the details can start to unravel before you can get a hold of them sometimes. We’ll help you make sense of health insurance quotes with this simple guide.

The first step to untangling the web of confusion is understanding the terminology insurance companies use when preparing health insurance quotes. Then you need to be aware of the different types of policies.

Terminology

There are insurance glossaries you can use to look up any terms you don’t understand on your health insurance quotes, but the basic terms you need to know to compare most quotes are listed here.

  • Co-insurance
    • Some insurance companies cover 100% of your bills after you’ve met your deductible. Others cover additional expenses at a lower rate, such as 80% or 70%. This is known as co-insurance.
  • Co-pay
    • When your policy covers specific doctor visits, prescription drugs, and certain procedures before your deductible is met, you will often be charged a co-pay of $5 – %15. This is called your co-pay.
  • Deductible
    • The amount you have to pay out-of-pocket each plan year before the insurance company kicks in.

Types of Healthcare Plans

Not all healthcare plans are created equal. You should be familiar with the main types of policies when comparing health insurance quotes.

  • Traditional or Indemnity Plans
    • You get the same level of benefits no matter which doctors you use. Typically these plans have high deductibles and low premiums.
  • Managed Care Organizations

Managed Care is a general term applied to health insurance plans that use networks of providers and pre-set co-pays to keep costs low. There are several different types, each with their own flavor.

    • HMOs
      • Health Maintenance Organizations typically require patients to use approved hospitals and network doctors, but require only a small co-pay for most preventative care.
    • PPOs
      • Preferred Provider Organizations offer the benefits of a network with the flexibility of a traditional plan. They cover in-network care with only a small co-pay, but may offer some coverage outside of their networks, too. Most pay a percentage of out-of-network costs, and may require a deductible.
    • POS Plans
      • Point-of-Service Plans are based on referral networks. If your doctor refers you to see a specialist, the insurance usually picks up all or most of the tab. You may be able to refer yourself and get coverage with co-insurance.
